Stay home when fever is 100 degrees or above or if your child is vomiting
If your child "isn't feeling too great" but appears to be well enough to sit up and watch T.V., play any electronic game, or play with their toys, please send them to school. The "mom" side of me will let you know if it looks like they should be snuggled up at home in bed : )
What Does the Research Say?
Start the year strong
The absences during the first month of school tend to predict frequent absences throughout the school hear. in fact, almost half of all students that missed more than two days in September missed almost a month of school!
Students that miss almost a month of school each year end up missing over a year by the time they graduate!
What is considered to be chronic absence?
Missing 2 or more days per month
So, what's the problem with a few absences a month?
Negative academic progress
Keeps children from reading proficiently by the end of third grade, which reduces chances of graduating on time
Higher chance of dropping out of high school
But my child wasn't feeling well. Are my child's chances better if the absences are excused?
Sadly, no. If they are not at school, they are missing out on crucial learning and not keeping up with their peers.
My child is not absent too much, only a few minutes late to school
Unfortunately, that's just as bad. The tardies will add up to more than 33 hours by the time they are in high school. Factor in the "normal" absences that kids have, and your child will still miss over a year by the time they are ready to graduate.
Call the school office (541 440-4085) or text/call Mrs. Backen (541 580-1036) to excuse any absence.
Planning a trip?
First, please let me know. then stop by the office to fill out a "Prearranged Absence" form. If the principal approves the absence, she will forward it to me.
In order for your child to not get too far behind his/her peers, the missed work will need to be completed. If new concepts are introduced, you will need to teach your child so that he/she is not at a disadvantage when returning to school. Let me know if you'd like for me to send the work with your child shortly before the trip or if you'd prefer to have it sent home after the trip.
Although occasional tardies due to unforeseen emergencies can't be helped, excessive tardies can.
If you know there's a chance that traffic or trains may slow you down, leave the house earlier.
If the morning routine is crazy at your house, have children shower at night and have their new clothes laid out ready to go.
If it is because you or your child are tired in the morning, plan on earlier bedtimes during the school week (8:00 is recommended for 3rd graders). Yes, life happens, but learning can't happen if they aren't in the classroom, refreshed and ready to go..
Why does it really matter if my child is a few minutes late?
Students walking in late are self conscious and frustrated. They are often embarrassed and/or upset about what happened during the morning to make them late.
Not only are they late walking in, but their brain can't focus on learning until they settle down and figure out what the class is working on.
The teacher needs to stop teaching to get them settled and caught up on what was missed.
